ATLETICO EXTEND LA LIGA LEAD

Atletico Madrid are back on form in Spain following their league win over European hopefuls Villarreal on Sunday. The La Liga leaders had gone three games without a win in all competitions before the away game with the Yellow Submarines at the weekend.

The three-match winless run for Atletico Madrid included two games in the league against the same team Levante and the disappointing loss to Premier League giants Chelsea in the first leg of their round of 16 tie in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid played out a 1-1 draw at the home of Levante in a rescheduled game played two weeks ago before they were beaten 2-0 at home by the same team last weekend.

The two results against Levante allowed Barcelona to close the gap on Atletico Madrid as far as the league title is concerned in the topflight in Spain. Barcelona defeated hosts Sevilla 2-0 to move to within two points of leaders Atletico Madrid, who had played two games more than the Catalans at that point.

Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi were on target for Barcelona in the away win over Sevilla. Atletico Madrid were able to stretch the lead back to five points with a game in hand, courtesy the 2-0 away win over Villarreal thereby ending a run of two games without a win in the topflight in Spain. Atletico Madrid took the lead through an own goal from left-back Alfonso Pedraza on 25 minutes off a Stefan Savic header before Joao Felix capitalized on the poor defending from Villarreal centre back Pau Torres to wrap up the 2-0 win for the league leaders in the topflight in Spain.
