Chelsea have reportedly made a move on Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Spanish national team star Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid. According to media outlet Mundo Deportivo in Spain, European champions Chelsea have made initial contact in the quest to sign the Spanish international midfielder.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel enjoyed a strong end to the season after he led his team past Manchester City to win the Champions League title and he’s eager to build on that by signing quality players to boost his squad for the new season and Saul could be one of those players though Manchester United might have something to say about that.
Saul still has five years left on the nine-year deal he signed at Atletico Madrid in 2017. He was a regular player in the team as Atletico Madrid won the Spanish La Liga ahead of both Real Madrid and Barcelona. Atletico Madrid started the season as third favourite but they were able to win the league title for the firsr time since 2014. Saul played 33 times for the Spanish capital club on the way to winning that league title. However, his Atletico Madrid form was not enough for him to seal a place in the Spain squad for Euro 2020.
Spain manager Luis Enrique left Saul out of his 24-man squad for the tournament starting later this week despite having two more slots for players. The participating teams have 26 slots each for players.
